Mission StatementThe mission of the WHOI Coastal Ocean Institute-Rinehart Coastal Research Center is to support and enrich the coastal research activities of the WHOI community, particularly those research activities that directly affect the protection and enhancement of coastal resources.\r\n

\r\nA "center" was originally established in 1979 in response to the need for more active involvement of Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in interdisciplinary coastal research. The COI-RCRC builds on existing departmental excellence by encouraging interdepartmental research projects and facilitating field and laboratory research.\r\n

\r\nA principal objective of the COI-RCRC is to improve understanding of the coastal ocean (its biology, chemistry, geology, and physics) through innovative research and education. The Institute seeks to encourage and initiate interdisciplinary research on fundamental coastal ocean processes and then communicate the results of this research to the resource management, and policy communities and to the general public.

FacultyThe Center is directed by a senior member of the WHOI scientific staff, supported by a part-time staff and advised by an advisory committee. The RCRC Advisory Committee consists of representatives of the five WHOI disciplinary departments. A list of current Advisory Committee members is found on he website. Approximately one-third of WHOI?s scientific effort is directed to coastal research and under the RCRC umbrella, scientists, engineers, and students combine forces for multi-disciplinary field and laboratory studies on local, national, and international scales.

Location Woods Hole, a village of Falmouth Massachusetts on Cape Cod, is a dynamic world center for marine science. WHOI shares the village with two other private laboratories, two federal government facilities and an undergraduate education program. Together, these organizations employ more than 1,400 people. WHOI was chartered in 1930 and occupies extensive facilities in Woods Hole village and on a wooded 190-acre campus overlooking Vineyard Sound. Due to the multidisciplinary nature of oceanography, many researchers focus on scientific questions that cross disciplinary lines; the COI-RCRC was created at WHOI to enhance these collaborations. COI-RCRC activity falls into five broad areas: research support, education, communication-outreach, special projects and instrumentation-facilities.
FacilitiesIn addition to laboratory and field studies, coastal investigators at WHOI conduct experimental studies utilizing flumes, wave tanks, and mesocosms (laboratory ecosystems that approximate natural conditions) in collaboration with scientists from other institutions.
Academic ProgramCOI-RCRC supports the WHOI education program primarily through post-doctoral awards and small start-up grants to WHOI students for thesis research....
