Tom Safford (Marine Environmental Policy & Management in Sociology)… He comes to UNH from the Coastal Services Center of NOAA.

Tom Weber has joined the faculty of the Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping (Research Professor in Acoustics). His work focuses on high frequency acoustics and its use for biological and geological assessment in shallow waters.

Grad Announcements: Undergraduate and graduate course and research opportunities at the Shoals Marine Laboratory have been expanded over the past two years http://www.sml.cornell.edu/.

These funds included new support for the diverse programs in marine biology (estuarine ecology & restoration, aquaculture, fisheries, invasive species, large pelagics, etc…), oceanography (coastal mapping, hydrothermal vent research, continental shelf geology, etc…), and ocean engineering (offshore aquaculture, storm water management, acoustics, etc…).

New initiatives included, among others, ~$3M to support Law of the Sea related mapping by CCOM, and $1M from the NH Charitable Foundation to support Fred Short’s international SeagrassNet research & monitoring program.

Research awards granted in support of research include: $1.9M from CICEET; $1M from NH Sea Grant; and $1M from CRRC and $400K from the NH Estuaries Project.

June 2006

Rep: Jeffrey Runge

Jeffrey Runge featured activities at the Coastal Ocean Observing Center at the University of New Hampshire. Using the R/V Gulf Challenger, the Center visits stations for measurement of physical and biological variables in a line extending from Portsmouth Harbor to Wilkinson Basin. The aftermath of the coastal inundation that occurred in May was measured, including remarkable satellite images showing the extent of river freshwater discharge into the western Gulf of Maine.
