Dr. Bonnie J. McCay  
 

Dr. Bonnie J. McCay is a Professor of Anthropology and Ecology at Rutgers University, New Jersey, USA.  She earned her doctoral degree at Columbia University, New York, based on anthropological research on the commercial fisheries and fishing communities of Fogo Island, northeastern Newfoundland. After starting to teach at the university, she expanded her research to the U.S. eastern seaboard, Nova Scotia, Norway, and Mexico.  Major topics in this work include the roles of property rights and community in fisheries management, the development of community-based and cooperative research and management, and most generally the interplays of knowledge and stewardship in public trust/ common fisheries.
