Gulf of Maine Symposium

Dr. Pete Jumars

Dr. Pete Jumars (B.A. Biology, 1969, University of Delaware; Ph.D., 1974, Scripps Institution of Oceanography) began his career studying deep-sea infaunal diversity and moved to process studies of sedimentary benthos, primarily deposit feeding, bioturbation and biological-physical interactions of many sorts, including biological fluid dynamics and bioacoustics.  More recently he has broadened his interests to include the solid mechanics of burrowing, the interaction of small vortices with phytoplankton, and habitat use by bentho-pelagic micronekton.  He is most familiar with bathyal communities off San Diego, shallow-water communities in Puget Sound (24 yr experience) and shallow-water communities in midcoast Maine (10 yr experience).  He is currently the Director of the School of Marine Sciences, University of Maine.
