RARGOM has sponsored or co-sponsored a number of Gulf-related technical meetings and the proceedings are summarized in a series of workshop reports. Technical reports produced by other organizations may be found under “Regional Research” on this website.
The Gulf of Maine Regional Marine Research Program. 1992.
Gulf of Maine Research Plan Prepared by Regional Association for Research on the Gulf of Maine.
The RMRP Research Plan guided the funding decisions of this regional program and is available as a pdf file on this website at URL: http://www.rargom.org/GoMTechnicalReports/ResearchPriorities.pdf
Regional Association for Research on the Gulf of Maine. 1993.Gulf of Maine Data and Information Systems RARGOM Report 93-1. Phelps, D. K. et al., eds. 204 pg
The development of predictive models and the interpretation of natural processes in the Gulf require data. RARGOM convened a workshop to assess individual institution roles and responsibilities, and to determine regional interest in the creation of a data/information management system. Specific recommendations are presented. Report available in hard copy from RARGOM.
Regional Association for Research on the Gulf of Maine. 1994.Gulf of Maine Circulation Modeling: RARGOM Report 94-1. Braasch, E. ed. 102 pg.
This workshop assembled a series of presentations on circulation modeling projects and initiated a regional discussion on modeling prospects and potential cooperation in the region. Several large research or monitoring projects (e.g., USGS, RMRP, GLOBEC) operate on varying time and space scales and opportunities for project coordination were discussed. Report is available in hard copy from RARGOM.
Regional Association for Research on the Gulf of Maine. 1994.Gulf of Maine Habitat: RARGOM Report 94-2. Stevenson, D. and Braasch, E. eds., 146 pg.
Convened to address habitat information needs, this meeting focused on habitat-related management goals, management information needs and research priorities. Working Group discussions, plenary presentations and a short bibliography are included along with a list of research priorities. Report available from RARGOM.
Regional Association for Research on the Gulf of Maine. 1995.The Health of the Gulf of Maine Ecosystem: Cumulative Impacts of Multiple Stressors RARGOM Report
96-1. Dow, D. and Braasch, E. eds., 180 pg
Convened at the request of NOAA-NMFS, this workshop assessed the human-caused factors (i.e., anthropogenic stressors, fisheries, marine mammals/protected species) affecting ecosystem health in the Gulf and identified research and management options to enhance environmental quality.
Regional Association for Research on the Gulf of Maine. 1997.Gulf of Maine Ecosystem Dynamics. RARGOM Report 97-1. Wallace, G. and Braasch, E. eds., 400 pg.
Convened in St. Andrews, New Brunswick, this workshop provided an opportunity for a region-scale discussion of recent advances in our scientific understanding of the Gulf ecosystem. Underlying discussion themes were ecosystem modeling and trans-boundary linkages between terrestrial and adjacent marine systems. The report is available in hard copy from U Mass Boston, Urban Harbor Institute.
Regional Association for Research on the Gulf of Maine. 1997.
Mechanisms for Improving the Integration of Science and Management in Decisions Affecting the Environmental Quality of the Gulf of Maine.
RARGOM Report 97-2. Ballard, S., M. Connor and D. Gordon, eds., 12 pp.
The need to integrate state-of-the-art scientific results into effective strategies for resource management has been well documented. This meeting challenged scientists and managers to work together in one intensive day to seek ways to bridge the “scientist-manager” gap and to suggest new tools that will help to integrate science and policy. Report is available from RARGOM.
Regional Association for Research on the Gulf of Maine. 1998. Gulf of Maine Ocean Observing System. RARGOM Report 98-1
A regional discussion to assess the need for a coordinated observing system in the Gulf including an expansion of monitoring statins built on existing infrastructure, a coordinated mechanism to assess monitoring results and a repository for local monitoring efforts. Data products should be routine, available on demand and useful to a broad audience.
Regional Association for Research on the Gulf of Maine. 2000. Establishing a Framework for Effective Modeling of the Gulf of Maine. RARGOM Report 00-1.
Regional Association for Research on the Gulf of Maine. 2002. Scientific Workshop on the Gulf of Maine Ocean Observing System (GoMOOS, Inc.). RARGOM Report 02-1
GoMOOS was created in 1999, as a result of a previous RARGOM workshop (Report 98-1). Established as a regional service to provide useful data to a broad range of coastal users, this workshop was designed to introduce GoMOOS to the regional scientific community, obtain feedback from scientists ion the initial implementation plan, and to initiate the planning for subsequent stages. Report available I hard copy from RARGOM.
